Corporación del Cobre (Codelco), the Chilean state owned copper producer, has awarded Metso Minerals (Sala) AB a contract to supply 25 metal slurry pumps for the world’s largest copper mine, El Teniente.
Located 80km south-east of Santiago, the mine currently produces 35.5 million tonnes/year of ore.

The Metso pumps will be installed as part of the concentrator plant expansion program. The order includes XM700, XM500 and XM350 pumps. Weighing a hefty 20 tonnes, the XM700 is the largest pump Metso Minerals have ever produced.
According to Mr Jan Andersson, product manager for Metso Slurry Pumps, Metso won the contract because of its ability to deliver a complete package of mechanical and electrical control equipment to a strict budget and schedule.
"This is an important order for us, both in terms of prestige and establishing ourselves in the important Latin American market," says Mr Andersson.
He adds, "We are delighted to receive such a large order and are looking forward to demonstrating the effectiveness of our new range in the field."
Delivery is scheduled for June 2002.
